A walkway looks simple until it's not level with your porch, or it heaves where a tree root sits under it. We grade it right, joint it right, and pour it to hold up.
The part you don't see is the part that matters
Most sidewalk problems aren't cracks in the surface, they're a bad base underneath it. Roanoke has a lot of clay soil and a lot of grade change between the street and the front door, and if the sub-base isn't compacted right, the walk settles unevenly within a year or two, especially after a wet winter. We excavate to a consistent depth, compact a gravel base, and grade the whole run to drain away from the house instead of pooling against the foundation or icing over in a shaded spot. We pour at a proper thickness, place control joints where the walk is actually going to want to crack, and finish with a broom texture so it's not slick when it's wet. In older Roanoke neighborhoods with mature trees, we also look at root systems near the walk before we pour, since a root under a thin slab is a heave waiting to happen. Questions before you call
Why did my old sidewalk crack and heave in the first place?
Almost always it's the base, not the concrete. No compacted gravel underneath, or a tree root growing under a thin slab, will push a walkway up unevenly over time. We address both before we pour.
Do you need to tear out my whole old sidewalk?
Usually yes if it's cracked, sunken, or trip-hazard uneven — patching a bad section next to a bad base just fails again. We tear out, haul off, and pour new in one job.
Is a sidewalk in the city right-of-way different from one on my property?
It can require a permit and has to meet certain width and slope standards depending on where you are in Roanoke. We'll tell you upfront if that applies to your job and handle the paperwork.
How thick should a sidewalk actually be?
A standard walkway is poured thicker than most people expect for the loads it needs to handle, especially if it crosses a driveway apron or gets vehicle traffic at all. We size the thickness to how it'll actually be used.
How long before I can walk on a new sidewalk?
