What a slab actually needs under it
A slab is only as good as what's underneath it, and that's the part nobody sees once it's poured. We excavate to grade, bring in and compact a gravel base — usually 4 inches, more if the ground is soft or if it's carrying a lift or heavy equipment — and check that it's compacted, not just spread and hoped for. Roanoke sits on a lot of clay, and clay holds water and moves with freeze-thaw. Skip the base compaction and you get a slab that settles unevenly within a year or two, cracks along one edge, or pulls away from a garage door track. From there it's forming to the right thickness — 4 inches for a shed or shop floor, thicker for anything holding equipment or a vehicle lift — wire mesh or rebar where the load calls for it, and a vapor barrier under garage floors so moisture doesn't wick up through the slab into whatever you're storing on it. We cut control joints at the right spacing before the concrete has a chance to crack on its own terms, and we grade the slope so water runs off instead of pooling at a door or a wall. The finish gets broomed or smoothed depending on how the slab will be used, and it needs time to cure before it takes weight. Rush that step, or pour on ground that's too wet or partly frozen, and you're looking at a slab that spalls, dusts, or cracks within the first winter. That's the difference between a slab you forget about and one you're patching in two years.

Walk the site
We look at the ground, what's going on top of the slab, and how much load it needs to carry — a shed floor and an equipment pad are not the same job.

Excavate and compact base
We dig to grade and bring in a compacted gravel base. This is the step that decides whether the slab holds up or settles.

Form, reinforce, and pour
Forms go up square, wire mesh or rebar goes in where the load calls for it, vapor barrier goes down for garage floors, and the crew pours and finishes it — broom or smooth, whichever fits the use.

Joint and cure
Control joints get cut at the right spacing so the slab cracks where it's supposed to, and we give it time to cure before anything drives or rolls onto it.

Walkthrough
We walk the finished slab with you, check the slope and finish, and clean up the site before we leave.
Questions before you pour a slab
How thick does my slab need to be?
A shed or shop floor is usually 4 inches. If you're parking a vehicle, running a lift, or setting heavy equipment on it, it needs to be thicker with reinforcement to match. Tell us what's going on top of it and we'll size it right.
Do I need a vapor barrier?
For a garage floor, yes — it keeps moisture from wicking up through the slab. For an outdoor shed or equipment pad it usually isn't necessary. We'll tell you which applies to your job.
Why did my old slab crack or sink?
Almost always it's what was under it — the base wasn't compacted, or there wasn't enough base at all. Roanoke's clay soil moves with freeze-thaw, and a slab poured straight on ungraded clay will settle unevenly over time.
Do you use rebar or wire mesh?
Depends on the load. A shed floor might only need wire mesh; an equipment pad or anything carrying real weight gets rebar. We'll spec it to what the slab is actually going to hold.
Can you pour a slab in the winter?
Concrete needs the ground to be workable and above freezing to cure properly. We'll tell you honestly if the weather's against you rather than pour something that won't hold up.
Do you handle the excavation too?
Yes — digging out the area, hauling off what needs to go, base and compaction, forming, and the pour are all one job with one crew.
